Discover (Project Concept and Goals)
Discover
Exploration and Insight Gathering
Initial Research: To kick off the project, I comprehensively explored the historical and contemporary situations of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). This stage was critical for grounding my work in robust data and various perspectives. I sourced academic journals, sifted through media reports, and parsed databases, focusing on migration trends, economic impacts, and the rich personal narratives of OFWs.
Field Research: I reached out directly to OFWs to hear their stories firsthand. Through interviews, surveys, and direct observations, I sought to uncover the layers of personal, emotional, and cultural experiences that statistics alone cannot show. This hands-on approach was crucial for capturing the essence of their daily lives and the complexities of their experiences abroad.
Stakeholder Interviews: I tried to reach out to a variety of experts—including migration scholars, cultural anthropologists, and labour rights advocates—as well as NGOs and community leaders who interact closely with OFWs. Unfortunately, these discussions did not materialise and would have enriched my understanding and helped me pinpoint the critical issues and diverse perspectives that could shape my project.
Empathy and Understanding Development
Persona Creation:
To better grasp the diverse experiences of OFWs, I created detailed personas for different groups within this community, such as domestic workers, healthcare workers, seafarers, and undocumented workers. These personas helped me visualise their unique circumstances and served as a constant reference throughout the project.
Empathy Mapping:
Using empathy maps, I laid out the emotional, psychological, and practical dimensions of OFWs’ lives. This process was instrumental in identifying their key pain points, fears, and aspirations and understanding the factors that affect their well-being.
Goal Definition
Awareness and Advocacy Goals: I set clear goals to elevate the narrative beyond the typical economic contributions of OFWs, focusing on their personal sacrifices, challenges, and resilience. The aim was to foster greater empathy and understanding among a global audience.
Educational Objectives:
I aimed to educate the general public and targeted stakeholders, such as policymakers and academic circles, on the intricacies of OFW lives and the broader implications of migration policies.
Community and Support Goals:
Another primary goal was to enhance the support networks for OFWs by boosting communication and advocacy efforts that empower them and facilitate stronger cultural and social connections.
Project Scope and Mission Statement
Mission Statement Crafting:
I formulated a mission statement to clearly articulate the purpose of the project: to bring to light the diverse and complex stories of OFWs through an engaging, empathetic, and ethically responsible design approach.
Scope Definition:
I carefully defined the project’s scope, deciding on the extent of narratives to cover, which geographic and demographic segments to focus on, and the types of media that would best convey these stories.
I laid a solid foundation of insight and empathy by methodically tackling each of these steps in the Discover phase. This groundwork ensured that every subsequent project phase would be informed by accurate understanding and tailored to meet OFWs’ genuine needs and experiences.

Mission Statement:
“My mission is to humanise and illuminate the diverse and complex stories of Overseas Filipino Workers through engaging, empathetic, and ethically responsible design. By leveraging the power of storytelling and visual narratives, I aim to raise awareness about their sacrifices and challenges, celebrate their contributions, and advocate for their rights and well-being.”
With this mission statement, I wanted to encapsulate the heart of the project, emphasising both the need for empathy and the desire to effect positive change for OFWs. The statement serves as a beacon, guiding all aspects of the project, from content creation to advocacy efforts.
Scope Definition
In defining the scope of my project on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), I focused on creating clear boundaries and specific goals to guide my efforts effectively. Here’s how I approached it:
Project Focus:
The core focus of my project is to highlight the personal and cultural narratives of OFWs, going beyond their economic contributions. I want to explore these workers’ complex and multifaceted experiences, particularly in the context of their family relationships, cultural identities, and emotional well-being.
Geographical Scope:
I decided to concentrate on OFWs in key regions, such as the Middle East, North America, and Asia, where large numbers of Filipino workers reside. This geographical focus allows me to address both the common and unique challenges faced by OFWs in different parts of the world.
Thematic Areas:
The project will cover several thematic areas, including:
Family and Separation: Exploring the impact of migration on OFW families, including the challenges of long-distance relationships and the effects on children.

Define
Formation!
Define (Design Methodology)
Define
After laying a solid foundation in the Discover phase, I moved on to defining the design methodology that would best communicate the complexities and emotional depths of the OFW stories I had gathered. I aimed to select methods and tools that would be effective in storytelling and respectful of the subjects’ dignity.
Choosing the Right Medium:
Multimedia Approach: I decided on a multimedia approach, recognising that the diverse experiences of OFWs would be best represented through a combination of different media. This would include a book, digital illustrations, documentary photography, interactive web elements, and perhaps even video content. Each medium would be chosen based on its ability to convey specific aspects of the narratives—photography to document reality, illustrations to represent emotional and cultural dimensions, and interactive elements to engage and educate the audience dynamically.
Digital Illustration:
Style and Tone: I carefully considered the style and tone of the illustrations and wanted to reexplore my basic illustration skills. I wanted them to be culturally authentic and sensitive to the emotional weight of the stories. The illustrations would not only complement the text and photographs but also fill in gaps where photographs might be too intrusive or not available to use.
Documentary Photography:
Ethical Considerations: Given the personal nature of the stories, it was crucial to approach photography with ethics at the forefront. I planned to work only with photographers with experience in sensitive environments and who could engage with subjects respectfully, ensuring their participation was informed and consensual.
Interactive Design:
User Engagement: To make the digital components as engaging and informative as possible, I outlined plans for interactive maps, timelines, and perhaps even virtual reality setups that could immerse the user in the environments OFWs often find themselves in. These elements would be designed to attract interest and encourage deeper understanding and empathy. Unfortunately, my (INDUSTRY STANDARD) Adobe Creative Cloud software produced multiple errors far beyond what my HND in Computing knowledge allowed me to fix, so I was not able to design these.
Technology Integration:
Feasibility and Accessibility: I assessed the technological requirements and constraints for implementing interactive and multimedia elements. The digital outcomes needed to be accessible to a broad audience, including those with limited internet bandwidth or access to advanced hardware, which is often the case in many parts of the Philippines and other areas where OFWs are based.
Collaborative Feedback:
Iterative Process: Recognising the importance of getting it right, I set up a plan for an iterative design process. This would involve regular reviews and feedback sessions with cultural advisors, OFW community representatives, and other stakeholders. Their input would be essential in refining the design elements to ensure they accurately and sensitively portrayed the OFW stories. However, due to no communication from those that I reached out to, this plan went into the bin, along with my frustration.
Documentation and Prototyping:
Prototypes: Before finalising any part of the project, I planned to create detailed prototypes of the digital outcomes, the layout of the printed book, and the storyboard for the documentary film. These prototypes would be tested with target audience groups to gather initial reactions and feedback, which would then inform further refinements. However, as previously mentioned, Adobe Creative Cloud produced multiple errors, resulting in a loss of so much work that words fail me right now.
By trying to define a clear and thorough design methodology, I did aim to ensure that the project would not only resonate with audiences but also honour and accurately represent the lives and stories of the OFWs I had come to know through my research. This phase was about setting the standards and strategies that would guide the creative execution of the project, making sure that every element, from the aesthetic choices to the technical implementations, was aligned with the project’s goals and ethical commitments.
Choosing the Right Medium
When planning how to tell the stories of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), I knew that choosing a suitable medium would be crucial to conveying their diverse experiences and challenges effectively. I considered various options to determine which best aligned with the project’s goals.
1. Digital Exhibition:
I decided an interactive digital exhibition would be a great medium because it offers flexibility and accessibility. The digital platform would allow me to include multimedia elements like videos, photos, and written narratives, creating a dynamic user experience. This would also make the content accessible globally, which was necessary given the international audience for these stories.
2. Printed Book:
I also wanted to create a printed book because a tangible collection of narratives and images would have a lasting impact. I envisioned the book as a curated showcase of personal stories and artistic interpretations readers could hold, reflect on, and even pass down. The book would be ideal for reaching audiences who appreciate traditional media and those in educational settings.
3. Documentary Film:
Given the power of visual storytelling, a documentary film would be an impactful way to highlight the emotional and human aspects of the OFWs’ lives. Through interviews and footage, I could bring viewers directly into the world of these workers, allowing their voices to be heard directly and creating an emotional connection that resonates deeply.
4. Traveling Photo Exhibition:
A travelling photo exhibition would be compelling for community engagement. Displaying large-format photographs and captions in accessible public spaces would create an intimate and reflective atmosphere, encouraging visitors to pause and consider the stories being told. This medium would be particularly effective for reaching audiences who might not otherwise engage with digital or traditional media.
5. Social Media and Online Platforms:
Lastly, leveraging social media and online platforms would be vital for reaching a wider audience and encouraging dialogue. These platforms allow me to share snippets of the content, invite feedback, and foster a community around the project, making it more interactive and engaging for people who might not have the time or access to engage with the other mediums.
Ultimately, combining these mediums would provide a holistic and effective way to tell the OFWs’ stories, each medium serving a unique purpose and audience. This approach would ensure that the project’s impact was broad and meaningful.
Digital Illustration
When I decided to use digital illustration for my project, I wanted to ensure that the medium effectively conveyed the emotional depth and cultural nuances of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) stories.
1. Style and Tone:
I chose a style that resonates with the vibrant cultural identity of the Philippines while also highlighting the emotional landscapes of the narratives. I wanted the illustrations to be warm and inviting yet capable of depicting OFWs’ complexities and sometimes challenging experiences. The goal was to capture the characters’ resilience and vulnerability in a way that photography alone might not achieve.
2. Complementing Photography:
The illustrations were intended to complement the documentary photography I planned to use. While the photos provide a raw and realistic view of the OFWs’ environments, the illustrations were meant to add an imaginative layer, showcasing thoughts, dreams, and cultural motifs that wouldn’t be visible in straightforward photographs. This approach allowed me to explore more abstract or symbolic aspects of their experiences.
3. Cultural Sensitivity:
I carefully ensured that the illustrations would be culturally sensitive and accurate. I researched Filipino culture, symbols, and traditional art styles to do this. I also consulted with OFWs and cultural experts to ensure the illustrations were authentic and respectful, avoiding unintended stereotypes or misrepresentations.
4. Emotional Impact:
My aim was for the digital illustrations to evoke empathy and connection. By illustrating personal moments, such as family gatherings or solitary reflections, I wanted viewers to connect emotionally with the characters. The illustrations also highlighted key themes like sacrifice and resilience through visual storytelling.
5. Audience Engagement:
I wanted the illustrations to engage a broad audience, including those who might be more visually oriented or less likely to engage with dense text or photography alone. The illustrations were designed to be eye-catching and engaging, drawing viewers into the stories and encouraging them to explore the content more deeply.
6. Technical Execution:
When executing the illustrations, I chose a digital medium that allowed for vibrant colours and detailed textures. The flexibility of digital illustration meant I could quickly revise and adjust the images based on feedback, ensuring that the final versions aligned with the project’s goals and expectations.
By incorporating digital illustration, I aimed to create a visually rich and emotionally resonant narrative that would effectively convey the unique stories of OFWs. The illustrations were intended to enhance the storytelling and provide a creative, imaginative lens through which to view their experiences.
Documentary Photography
When I set out to capture the experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) through documentary photography, I knew I wanted to focus on authentic and empathetic storytelling. My goal was to use imagery to illuminate the varied realities of OFWs lives, showcasing their resilience, struggles, and achievements.
1. Purpose:
I wanted the photography to provide a visual narrative that complements the other elements of the project. Through this medium, I aimed to capture candid moments that reflect OFWs’ daily lives, emotions, and environments.
2. Style and Approach:
Style: I decided on a candid and unobtrusive style, opting for natural lighting and avoiding overly staged or stylised shots. I wanted the photos to feel genuine and relatable, giving viewers a sense of being right there with the subjects.
Tone: The tone of the photographs varies depending on the subject matter. Some images are joyful and celebratory, highlighting moments of happiness and achievement, while others are sombre, focusing on challenges and sacrifices.
3. Themes:
a. Family and Separation:
Photograph: A mother, an OFW, sitting in her sparse living quarters, looking at a picture of her children back home. The light coming through a small window highlights her contemplative expression.
Objective: I wanted this image to convey the emotional cost of separation, showing the love and longing that defines many OFWs’ relationships with their families.
b. Cultural Identity:
Photograph: An OFW wearing traditional Filipino attire while working in a foreign setting, such as a healthcare worker in scrubs but with a Filipino scarf or pin.
Objective: The goal was to highlight the blending of cultural identities, showing how OFWs maintain their heritage while adapting to new environments.
c. Community and Support:
Photograph: A group of OFWs gathered for a community event, with expressions of joy and camaraderie.
Objective: I wanted to emphasise the importance of community among OFWs, capturing moments of togetherness that provide comfort and support in foreign lands.
d. Work and Contribution:
Photograph: An OFW at work, such as a seafarer on deck or a domestic worker tending to a home, captured in action and showing their dedication.
Objective: This photo was meant to showcase the professional contributions of OFWs, highlighting their skills and dedication across various sectors.
4. Ethical Considerations:
a. Consent:
I made sure to obtain informed consent from all the subjects, explaining the purpose of the project and how the photos would be used. This process was essential for building trust and ensuring participants were comfortable with their involvement.
b. Privacy:
I avoided capturing identifiable details to protect the subjects’ privacy if participants preferred anonymity. I also respected the dignity of the subjects, avoiding any exploitative or intrusive shots.
5. Presentation:
a. Format:
I chose a mix of black and white and colour photos, using black and white for more introspective or emotional moments and colour for vibrant, celebratory scenes. The photos were presented in both digital and print formats, allowing for different viewing experiences.
b. Integration:
The photographs were integrated throughout the digital exhibition, book, and documentary film, serving as visual anchors for key themes and stories. Each image was accompanied by captions or audio descriptions, providing context and enhancing the narrative.
By focusing on these aspects, I aimed to create a photographic narrative that was both impactful and respectful, providing a window into the lives of OFWs and illuminating their diverse experiences.
Interactive Design
When planning the interactive design for my project on Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), I focused on creating an engaging and immersive experience that would help users connect with the stories on a deeper level.
Objective:
My main objective was to design interactive elements that would make the content more engaging and educational while allowing users to explore the narratives at their own pace. I wanted the interactive features to encourage users to empathise with the OFWs experiences, fostering a better understanding of their lives.
1. Interactive Story Maps
To highlight the global presence of OFWs, I created interactive maps that showcased the different countries where they work.
Design: I used vibrant colours to indicate the concentration of OFWs in each country. When users clicked on a country, they were presented with essential information, such as the number of OFWs, typical occupations, and personal stories.
User Experience: My goal was for users to visually explore the global diaspora of OFWs, making the information accessible and engaging.
2. Multimedia Timelines
I also developed multimedia timelines that illustrated the history and evolution of Filipino labour migration.
Design: The timelines featured key events, policy changes, and personal anecdotes, using a mix of photos, videos, and text. Users could move through time and learn more about events.
User Experience: I wanted the timelines to provide context for the personal stories, showing how broader historical trends influenced individual lives.
3. Audio Narratives
For a more immersive experience, I integrated audio narratives where OFWs shared their stories in their own words.
Design: The audio clips were embedded within relevant sections of the digital exhibition. I paired these narratives with related visuals, such as photos and posters, to enhance the storytelling.
User Experience: By hearing the voices of the OFWs, I aimed to create a more personal and impactful connection for the users.
4. Augmented Reality (AR) Experiences
To provide an even more immersive exploration, I developed AR experiences that simulated the environments of different OFWs.
Design: These AR scenarios allowed users to step into the shoes of an OFW, such as a nurse in a Middle Eastern hospital or a seafarer on a ship. The experiences included interactive elements, like clickable objects that revealed additional information or audio clips.
User Experience: The goal was for users to gain a more visceral understanding of the challenges and realities faced by OFWs, enhancing their empathy and insight.
5. User Feedback and Engagement
To ensure the interactive elements were practical and user-friendly, I implemented feedback mechanisms and engagement features.
Design: I included feedback buttons and comment sections throughout the digital exhibition, encouraging users to share their thoughts and reactions. I also incorporated engagement features like quizzes and polls to make the experience more interactive and thought-provoking.
User Experience: I wanted to create a dynamic environment where users could not only learn but also interact with the content and each other, enhancing the project’s overall impact.
By focusing on these interactive design elements, I aimed to create a project that was informative, immersive, and emotionally engaging, helping users connect with the stories of OFWs in meaningful ways.
Technology Integration
When integrating technology into the project, I knew I needed to carefully consider the platforms and tools that best suit our objectives and audience needs. The goal was to leverage technology to enhance storytelling, facilitate engagement, and remain accessible to our diverse user base.
Website Platform:
I opted for a responsive website/page as the primary platform for the digital exhibition. As a developer, I created a page that would be user-friendly and accessible across devices, leveraging the power of a content management system; this allowed for easy updates and supported multimedia content, knowing that I’d need to regularly update the page with new stories, photos, and videos.
Interactive Elements:
To create engaging interactive elements like maps and timelines, I decided not to use specialised tools like Tableau for data visualisation and StoryMapJS for interactive storytelling as these tools require a lot of time to deliver the desired outcome and with a short period of time available for this project, I chose to use Microsoft Excel as a basic and faster tool selected for its flexibility and user-friendly interface, which allowed me to present complex information in an accessible and visually appealing manner.
Augmented Reality:
For the Augmented reality (AR) experiences, I developed immersive videos that ensured compatibility with common devices like smartphones, aiming to make the experience accessible.
Audio-Visual Media:
When incorporating audio and video, I selected hosting platforms like my website and YouTube. These platforms were chosen because they offer widespread compatibility and ease of use, both for uploading content and for audience access. I ensured that all audio and video content was optimised for various connection speeds, knowing that many OFWs might have limited internet access.
Engagement Tools:
To facilitate engagement and feedback, I integrated discussion forums and feedback forms directly into the website using tools like Disqus for comments and Google Forms for feedback questionnaires/surveys. These tools allowed for real-time engagement and easy data collection, providing valuable insights into user experiences and preferences.
Accessibility Features:
Accessibility was a key consideration. I made sure that the website and all multimedia content adhered to web accessibility standards. This included providing text descriptions for images, closed captions for videos, and ensuring that the site was navigable via keyboard for users with mobility issues.
Security and Privacy:
Security and privacy were also paramount, especially given the sensitive nature of some OFW stories. I worked on implementing robust security measures, including secure data storage, encryption, and privacy settings that allowed users to control how their information was shared.
Testing and Refinement:
Throughout the process, I conducted testing and refinement, running usability tests with my developer’s networks before members of the target audience, including OFWs and their families, could see it to ensure the technology was intuitive and met their needs. Their feedback guided adjustments and improvements, helping to create a seamless and engaging user experience.
By thoughtfully integrating technology into the project, I was able to create a digital platform that not only effectively tells the stories of OFWs but also invites users to engage with and learn from these narratives.
Collaborative Feedback
During the development phase, I knew that gathering feedback from various stakeholders would be crucial for ensuring that the project accurately reflected the experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and resonated with the intended audience. Here’s how I approached collaborative feedback:
1. Engaging with Stakeholders:
I started by reaching out to key stakeholders, including OFWs, their families, advocacy groups, cultural experts, and academics. I organised a series of feedback sessions in person and online to gather their input on the project’s themes, narratives, and design elements.
2. Creating Feedback Channels:
I set up dedicated channels, such as email, a private feedback forum, and periodic surveys, to facilitate open and ongoing feedback. I ensured these channels were easily accessible and communicated to all stakeholders.
3. Conducting Feedback Sessions:
I scheduled feedback sessions at various stages of the project. These sessions focused on specific aspects, like the storytelling approach, visual style, or interactive features. During these sessions, I actively listened to the stakeholders’ thoughts and encouraged open dialogue to understand their perspectives better.
4. Analysing Feedback:
After each feedback session, I reviewed and analysed the input received. I looked for common themes or concerns and paid close attention to any suggestions for improvement. I prioritised feedback based on its relevance to the project’s objectives and potential impact on the final product.
5. Iterating Based on Feedback:
Using the feedback, I made iterative changes to the project. For example, when stakeholders suggested that certain narratives were too complex or needed more context, I revised those sections to improve clarity and accessibility. I also incorporated visual elements or themes they indicated, ensuring that their voices were authentically represented.
6. Testing Revised Elements:
After making changes based on the initial feedback, I tested the revised elements with smaller focus groups to ensure the adjustments were effective. This iterative process helped me refine the project and align it more closely with the expectations and needs of the stakeholders.
7. Maintaining Open Communication:
Throughout the process, I maintained open communication with the stakeholders, informing them about the project’s progress and how their feedback was implemented. This helped build trust and fostered a shared ownership of the project.
By actively engaging with and incorporating feedback from stakeholders, I ensured that the project was representative of the OFWs’ experiences and aligned with the needs and expectations of the broader audience. This collaborative feedback process was essential for creating an authentic, impactful, and respectful final product of the stories being told.
Documentation and Prototyping
When it came to documentation and prototyping for the project, my main focus was on creating a transparent, structured approach that would guide the development process and help visualise the end product. I wanted to ensure that every step was documented for future reference and that the prototypes effectively communicated the intended user experience.
1. Documenting the Project:
Creating a Project Outline:
I started by outlining the project, detailing the main objectives, key themes, and the narrative structure. This document served as a roadmap, helping me stay focused on the project goals and ensuring that each component aligned with the overall vision.
This outline also included a timeline, specifying deadlines for each project phase. Keeping the timeline clear and accessible ensured that I stayed on track and met all key milestones.
Writing Detailed Specifications:
I wrote detailed specifications for each component, describing how they should function and interact. This included everything from the digital platform to the printed book and the documentary.
These specifications covered user interactions, visual design, and technical requirements, providing a comprehensive blueprint for the project development.
Documenting Feedback and Revisions:
As I gathered feedback from stakeholders and experts, I documented their input and outlined how it would be incorporated into the project.
This feedback log not only helped track the project’s evolution but also ensured that important insights weren’t lost or overlooked.
2. Prototyping the Components:
Creating Wireframes and Mockups:
I began prototyping by creating wireframes and mockups for the digital platform. These visual guides outlined the layout, navigation, and content placement, helping me visualise how users would interact with the platform.
The wireframes were initially low-fidelity, focusing on functionality and user flow. I then developed high-fidelity mockups that added colour, typography, and imagery to convey the look and feel of the final product.
Building Interactive Prototypes:
I built functional prototypes for the interactive elements that allowed for user testing and feedback. These prototypes included clickable timelines, interactive maps, and multimedia storytelling features.
I created these prototypes using tools like Figma, which allows for quick adjustments and iterative improvements based on user feedback.
Testing Prototypes with Users:
I tested the prototypes with representatives from the target audience, observing how they interacted with the components and gathering their feedback.
This user testing highlighted areas for improvement, which I documented and incorporated into the next iteration of the prototypes.

Develop (Narrative and Content Structure)
Develop
In the Development phase, my primary focus was crafting a compelling narrative and content structure that would engage the audience and honour the stories of the OFWs. I structured the content to take viewers on an emotional and informative journey through the lives of these workers, emphasising their personal stories against the backdrop of broader socio-economic themes and issues.
Creating Thematic Sections:
Framework Setup: I divided the project into several thematic sections, each designed to explore different facets of the OFW experience. These themes included historical migration patterns, personal sacrifices, cultural challenges, and the impact of separation on families. I envisioned each section as a chapter in a larger story, with each contributing its own unique perspective to the overarching narrative.
Narrative Flow: The narrative would start with a brief history of OFW migration, setting the stage by providing context. It would then move into deeper, more personal stories highlighting individual experiences. This progression was designed to gradually draw the audience deeper into the emotional landscape of the OFWs’ lives.
Integrating Multimedia Content:
Visual Storytelling: I used a blend of photography, Adobe stock footage and a digital illustration to tell these stories. The photographs provided a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the daily realities of OFWs, while illustrations helped to express more nuanced emotional and cultural themes that photos alone might not capture.
Interactive Elements: Interactive timelines and maps to help contextualise the information, allowing users to explore how historical events and global movements shaped the OFW experience. These elements were also intended to engage the user more actively, making the experience both educational and immersive.
Developing a Cohesive Design Language:
Consistency in Design: To ensure a cohesive visual and narrative flow across all mediums—digital, print, and exhibition—I developed a consistent design language that reflected the dignity and resilience of the OFWs. This included a color palette inspired by the Philippine landscape, typography that was both clear and expressive, and layout designs that facilitated an intuitive user journey.
Emotional Engagement: The design choices were also deeply informed by the desire to evoke empathy. I used close-up images and personal belongings in photographs to create intimate portraits of the OFWs, and I chose illustration styles that felt warm and approachable.
Scripting and Storyboarding:
Documentary Approach: After several tutorials it made sense to rethink about the final direction. This was something that was playing in the back of mind; the production of a mini documentary film (documinitary), I scripted a narrative that wove together personal interviews with broader thematic analysis. This required careful storyboarding to ensure that the film would be engaging and informative, providing a narrative arc that complemented the digital format.
The Development phase was both challenging and rewarding. It involved a lot of creative decision-making and technical implementation and out of the box thinking to overcome technical issues, all guided by the principle of respecting and accurately portraying the lives of the OFWs. By carefully crafting each element, from content to design, I aimed to create an engaging and impactful narrative that would bring the stories of OFWs to a global audience.
Develop (Ethical Considerations)
During the development phase, I prioritised ethical considerations, which were crucial given the sensitive nature of the stories involved. Handling the personal experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) required a careful and respectful approach, particularly as these narratives included elements of vulnerability and adversity.
Ethical Framework Establishment:
Guiding Principles: I established a set of ethical guidelines that informed all aspects of the project. These principles emphasised respect, consent, anonymity, and accurately representing participants’ stories. My commitment was to portray each story with integrity, avoiding sensationalism and respecting the dignity of all individuals involved.
Informed Consent: Ensuring informed consent was paramount. I communicated with all participants, explaining the project’s scope, how their contributions would be used, and their rights to withdraw at any time. This process was not a mere formality but a fundamental aspect of respecting their agency and autonomy.
Cultural Sensitivity and Accuracy:
Cultural Consultation: Recognising my own limitations in fully understanding every cultural nuance, I engaged with cultural consultants from the OFW community (including my OFW wife). These consultants reviewed project materials to ensure cultural accuracy and sensitivity. Their insights were invaluable, helping to avoid stereotypes and ensuring that the representations were respectful and true to the participants’ experiences.
Representation Authenticity: I was meticulous in how stories were presented, striving to maintain the authenticity of each narrative. This meant choosing words carefully, selecting representative and dignified images, and constantly checking that the content aligned with the participants’ perspectives and truths.
Privacy and Anonymity:
Protecting Identities: In cases where participants expressed a need for privacy, I took steps to anonymise their stories. This involved altering identifiable details and using pseudonyms. Ensuring privacy was about legal compliance and protecting participants from potential harm or discomfort.
Data Security: I implemented strict measures to secure and manage the personal data collected. Access to this data was restricted to me, and all data was stored securely to prevent unauthorised access.
Feedback and Iterative Adjustments:
Ongoing Participant Feedback: I established a feedback loop with participants, allowing them to review how their stories were portrayed before anything was finalised. This process gave participants the opportunity to suggest changes or withdraw their content if they felt it did not align with their intended message.
Ethical Reviews: Throughout the project, I conducted regular ethical reviews to assess and ensure adherence to the established guidelines. These reviews were critical checkpoints that helped identify any potential ethical issues that might arise as the project evolved.
Transparency with Audiences:
Clear Communication: In presenting the project to audiences, I was transparent about the methodologies used, the sources of the stories, and the ethical considerations involved. This transparency was aimed at building trust with the audience and reinforcing the credibility of the project.
The ethical considerations I integrated into every stage of the project development were not just about mitigating risks but about fostering a project environment that respected and honoured the participants and their stories. By taking these steps, I aimed to ensure that the project not only met high ethical standards but also positively impacted the participants and their communities.
Develop (Interactive and Engagement Layers)
In the development phase, I focused intensely on crafting interactive and engagement layers that would make the project not only informative but also immersive and dynamic. My goal was to create a platform where the stories of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) could be experienced in a way that fosters deep understanding and empathy.
Interactive Design Elements:
Dynamic Maps and Timelines: Before technical issues, I integrated interactive maps and timelines to provide a geographic and historical context for the stories. Users could scan QR codes in specific countries and time periods to discover related content, like personal narratives from OFWs or significant socio-economic events impacting migration trends. These features were designed to give users control over their learning journey, allowing them to explore content at their own pace and according to their interests.
Enhanced User Interaction:
Interactive Storytelling: I employed interactive storytelling techniques where users can choose different paths through the content, depending on which aspects of the OFW experience they are most interested in. This non-linear approach respects the user’s curiosity and autonomy, allowing for a more personalised exploration of the issues.
Multimedia Integration: I ensured that each story would be presented with a combination of text, images, audio, and video, providing a rich multimedia experience that caters to different learning preferences. Audio clips of OFWs sharing their stories in their own voices add a layer of authenticity and emotional depth.
Developing these interactive and engagement layers required a balance of technical skills, creative vision, and empathy. My aim was to create an engaging platform that not only tells the stories of OFWs but also invites users to actively participate in the narrative, fostering a deeper understanding and connection with the issues at hand. Unfortunately, this was not completely successful.
Creating Thematic Sections
I focused on creating thematic sections that would structure the content and highlight key aspects of the OFW experience. I wanted each section to capture a distinct element of their stories, weaving together narratives, visuals, and interactivity to engage the audience.
1. Historical Context
To set the stage, I created a section that explores the history of OFW migration. I wanted to provide a backdrop that contextualises their experiences. This section includes timelines and archival photos to illustrate key events, policies, and societal changes that have influenced Filipino migration. By grounding the audience in this context, I aimed to enhance their understanding of how these patterns have shaped the lives of OFWs today.
2. Personal Sacrifices
Next, I focused on the personal sacrifices made by OFWs. In this section, I featured intimate stories and testimonials that reveal the emotional costs of leaving home, such as being separated from family and missing significant life events. I used evocative photography and poignant illustrations to convey the depth of these sacrifices, hoping to evoke empathy and highlight the human side of labour migration.
3. Cultural Challenges
I then created a section dedicated to the cultural challenges that OFWs face. This section explores issues like cultural adaptation, discrimination, and identity struggles. I incorporated interactive elements, like quizzes or interactive maps, to engage the audience in thinking about how they might navigate similar challenges. My goal was to illustrate the resilience and adaptability of OFWs as they balance their Filipino identity with the cultures of their host countries.
4. Contributions and Impact
To shift the focus to OFWs’ positive impacts, I designed a section showcasing their contributions. Here, I highlighted how OFWs support their families through remittances, contribute to the economies of their host countries and the Philippines, and bring diverse skills and perspectives to their workplaces. I used infographics and video testimonials to celebrate their achievements and underscore the value they bring to the global community.
5. Future Aspirations
Finally, I wanted to end on a hopeful note with a section about future aspirations. This section looks at the dreams and goals of OFWs, whether it’s returning home to start a business, securing a better future for their siblings or children, or achieving personal and professional growth. I included interactive storytelling elements, like choose-your-own-adventure narratives, to engage the audience in thinking about the potential futures OFWs envision for themselves.
I created these thematic sections to provide a comprehensive and balanced portrayal of OFW experiences, blending historical context, personal narratives, and future hopes into a cohesive and engaging project.
Integrating Multimedia Content
When I started integrating multimedia content into the project about Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), my main goal was to enhance the storytelling experience by combining various types of media. This approach allowed me to present a rich, engaging narrative that connected with the audience on multiple levels.
1. Photographs:
To begin with, I chose a range of powerful photographs that depicted the daily lives and unique experiences of OFWs. I sourced images from professional photographers and community members, ensuring that the photographs captured authentic moments of work, family, and community. These images were strategically placed throughout the project to highlight key moments and add visual depth to the narratives.
2. Audio Clips:
Next, I integrated audio clips of OFWs telling their stories in their own words. These recordings included interviews, personal reflections, and even ambient sounds from their environments. Incorporating these audio elements allowed me to bring the stories to life, letting the audience hear the emotion and nuance in the workers’ voices. I used an audio player interface that was intuitive and easy to navigate, ensuring a smooth listening experience.
3. Videos:
I also included short video segments to showcase certain aspects of OFW life that couldn’t be fully captured through photos or audio alone. These videos ranged from documentary-style clips to personal vlogs, providing a dynamic look at the diverse experiences of OFWs. I embedded the videos within relevant sections of the project, creating a seamless flow between the different media formats.
4. Illustrations:
To add a creative touch and highlight more abstract concepts, I integrated digital illustrations throughout the project. These illustrations depicted themes such as family separation, cultural adaptation, and personal aspirations. The artwork added a layer of emotional resonance and visual interest, helping to convey complex ideas in a relatable way. I placed these illustrations alongside relevant stories or as standalone visual statements.
5. Infographics:
I designed clear and engaging infographics to present data and statistics related to OFWs. These visuals simplified complex information, such as remittance flows and migration trends, making it easier for the audience to grasp key insights. The infographics complemented the narrative content, providing context and background for the personal stories.
6. Interactive Elements:

By focusing on these aspects, I developed a cohesive design language that ties the project together and enhances the storytelling, creating a unified and impactful experience for the audience.
Scripting and Storyboarding
I wanted to ensure that the narrative flowed seamlessly and that the visuals supported the emotional impact of the stories. Here’s how I approached this phase of the project:
1. Setting the Scene:
I started by outlining the key themes and scenes I wanted to cover. I knew that OFWs’ experiences were diverse and multifaceted, so it was crucial to capture the broad range of emotions and situations they face. My main goal was to balance showing the sacrifices they make, their resilience, and their contributions to their families and society.
2. Writing the Script:
I began scripting by focusing on the core narrative for each project section. I wrote in a conversational tone, aiming to connect with the audience on a personal level. I carefully crafted each script to convey facts and emotions, ensuring the audience could understand the OFWs’ situations while feeling empathy for them.
Introductory Scene:
I started with a strong opening that showcased the global reach of OFWs. The script highlighted their importance and set the stage for a deeper exploration of their lives.
I wrote, “From bustling cities to remote villages, Filipino workers are the backbone of countless communities worldwide.”
Personal Stories:
I scripted personal narratives using direct quotes and testimonials for the sections focusing on individual stories. I aimed to capture their voices authentically, making the audience feel connected to each person’s journey.
An example script might be, “Maria, a Domestic Helper in Hong Kong, spends her days cleaning for her employer and their family while her heart aches for her family back home.”
Challenges and Resilience:
In the parts addressing the challenges OFWs face, I carefully balanced the script to show these workers’ struggles and strengths. I wanted to avoid a pity narrative and instead highlight their resilience.
An example might be, “Despite the loneliness and long hours, Jose keeps going, motivated by the hope of a better future for his children.”
3. Storyboarding:
Once I was happy with the script, I moved on to storyboarding. I drew simple sketches to visualise each scene, focusing on how the visuals would align with the narrative.
Visual Elements:
For the introductory scene, I sketched a montage of different cities and workplaces, showing the diversity of OFWs’ locations. I wanted to convey the idea that OFWs are everywhere, contributing to global society.
In the personal stories, I sketched close-ups of the workers’ faces, aiming to capture their emotions and make the audience feel a personal connection.
Flow and Transitions:
I planned smooth transitions between scenes, using visual cues to guide the audience from one story to the next. For example, I sketched a transition from a nursing station to a video call with family, showing the contrast between work life and longing for home.
Emotional Impact:
I paid special attention to each scene’s emotional arc. For the challenges section, I sketched scenes of isolation and hardship, followed by moments of hope and determination. My goal was to take the audience on an emotional journey that mirrored the experiences of the OFWs.
4. Reviewing and Refining:
After completing the storyboards, I reviewed them with some OFWs to ensure the narratives and visuals aligned with their experiences. Based on their feedback, I refined the script and storyboards to capture the intended emotions and messages better.
5. Finalising the Plan:
I finalised the plan once the script and storyboards were polished. This phase set the foundation for a compelling and cohesive presentation, aiming to give voice to OFWs’ diverse and impactful stories.

1. Researching Cultural Contexts:
Learning About Filipino Culture:
I began by immersing myself in Filipino culture and understanding its nuances, values, and traditions.
This included studying the Philippines’ history, languages, and customs, as well as the different regions and communities from which many OFWs originate.
For example, I explored the cultural significance of family in Filipino society and how it influences the decisions and experiences of OFWs; by doing this, I saw the same cultural significance of family in my own family as I explored the mindset of my wife and our children, and I was able to draw on my understanding from an old course certificate in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths University.
Understanding Migrant Experiences:
I also focused on understanding the experiences of Filipino migrants, particularly the challenges and opportunities they face abroad.
This included researching common issues like family separation, cultural adaptation, workplace discrimination, and the positive aspects of migration, like financial stability and personal growth.
For instance, I looked into how OFWs maintain their cultural identity while integrating into new communities, which helped me portray their experiences accurately.
2. Consulting with Cultural Advisors:
Engaging Filipino Experts:
To ensure cultural accuracy, I consulted with Filipino cultural advisors and experts who could provide insights and feedback on the project’s content.
These advisors included academics, community leaders, and OFWs, who helped guide the portrayal of Filipino culture and migrant experiences.
For example, I liaised with a Filipino anthropologist who reviewed the narrative themes and imagery to ensure they aligned with Filipino cultural values and perspectives.
Listening to OFW Voices:
I also engaged directly with OFWs, listening to their stories and feedback to understand their experiences and perspectives.
This helped ensure the project accurately reflected their realities and avoided misrepresentations or stereotypes.
For instance, I interviewed several OFWs about their daily lives, challenges, and aspirations, incorporating their voices into the storytelling to enhance authenticity.
3. Creating Culturally Sensitive Content:
Crafting Empathetic Narratives:
When developing the narratives, I focused on creating empathetic and respectful stories highlighting OFWs’ resilience and diversity.
This meant avoiding stereotypes or oversimplifications and instead focusing on authentic, multidimensional portrayals.
For example, I crafted narratives that balanced the challenges and triumphs of OFWs, showing their strength and adaptability in the face of adversity.
Selecting Respectful Imagery:
I selected imagery that accurately and respectfully represented Filipino culture and OFW experiences for the visual elements.
This included using culturally appropriate clothing, settings, and symbols, as well as avoiding imagery that could be seen as intrusive or exploitative.
For instance, I chose photographs that depicted OFWs positively and dignifiedly, avoiding images that sensationalised or stereotyped their experiences.
4. Reviewing and Refining:
Feedback and Adjustments:
Throughout the project, I sought feedback from cultural advisors and OFWs to ensure cultural sensitivity and accuracy.
This feedback helped me identify and address potential issues, refining the content to align with Filipino cultural values and OFW perspectives.
For example, after receiving feedback about a potentially insensitive portrayal, I adjusted the narrative and imagery to better match the cultural context.
Continuous Improvement:
I committed to continuous improvement, regularly reviewing the project for cultural sensitivity and accuracy and making necessary adjustments.

1. Informed Consent:
Clear Communication:
I started by clearly communicating the project’s purpose and scope to all participants, ensuring they understood how their information would be used.
I provided detailed information about the project, including potential risks and benefits, and made sure that participants felt comfortable asking questions or raising concerns.
For example, I explained to participants that their stories would be shared publicly, but they could choose to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym if they preferred.
Consent Forms:
I provided consent forms that outlined the details of the project, including options for maintaining privacy and anonymity.
The forms clearly stated that participation was voluntary and that participants could withdraw at any time.
For instance, I used the Participant Consent Form from Falmouth’s Research and Development Team, where participants could indicate whether they wanted to be identified or remain anonymous, allowing them to choose their level of privacy.
2. Protecting Identities:
Anonymising Data:
For participants who wished to remain anonymous, I anonymised their data by using pseudonyms and removing identifiable details from their stories.
I was careful to ensure that even indirect identifiers, like specific locations or unique characteristics, were altered or omitted to prevent identification.
For example, if a participant shared a unique job title or described a small community, I generalised or changed those details to protect their identity.
Confidentiality Measures:
I implemented confidentiality measures to safeguard participants’ information, such as secure data storage and limited access.
I ensured that only I had access to the original data and that all identifiable information was stored securely and separately from the project materials.
For instance, I used encrypted storage for sensitive data and maintained a clear policy on who could access and handle participant information.
3. Responsible Storytelling:
Ethical Narratives:
When crafting the narratives, I focused on ethical storytelling that respected participants’ privacy and autonomy.
This included avoiding details or imagery that could inadvertently reveal participants’ identities, especially when they had chosen to remain anonymous.
For example, I avoided using specific locations or recognisable features in the narratives, focusing instead on broader themes and experiences.
Respectful Imagery:
In selecting imagery for the project, I ensured that photos or illustrations did not compromise participants’ privacy or expose sensitive information.
I used general or abstract imagery when necessary and avoided using recognisable images of participants without explicit consent.
For instance, if a participant shared a personal photo, I either sought explicit permission to use it or replaced it with a representative illustration to protect their privacy.
4. Ongoing Vigilance:
Monitoring Feedback:
I remained vigilant in monitoring feedback from participants and audience members, ready to address any privacy or anonymity concerns that arose.
This included creating channels for participants to raise issues or request changes, such as removing their stories or altering identifying details.
For example, I provided contact information for participants to reach out if they had concerns about their privacy or wanted to withdraw from the project.
Continuous Improvement:
I committed to continuous improvement, regularly reviewing the project’s privacy and anonymity measures and making necessary adjustments.
This ongoing process helped me maintain a high standard of respect and responsibility, ensuring that participants’ trust and safety were prioritised throughout the project.

By focusing on privacy and anonymity, I aimed to create a safe and respectful environment for participants, allowing them to share their stories freely and confidently, knowing that their identities and information were protected.
Feedback and Iterative Adjustments
I knew gathering feedback and making iterative adjustments would be crucial for creating a product that resonates with the audience and accurately represents the experiences of OFWs. My focus was on creating a feedback loop that was continuous, responsive, and aligned with the project’s goals.
1. Gathering Feedback:
Audience Testing:
To start, I conducted audience testing with a diverse group of people, including OFWs, their families, and members of the general public.
This allowed me to gauge how different audiences responded to the content, design, and overall impact of the project.
For example, I organised focus groups where participants shared their thoughts and feelings after interacting with the project, highlighting what resonated with them and what didn’t.
Expert Reviews:
I also sought feedback from experts in areas such as migration, immigration, labour rights, and cultural studies.
Their insights helped me refine the project’s accuracy and sensitivity, ensuring it was factual and respectful.
For instance, I consulted with an Immigration Advisor who pointed out some areas where the narrative could be clearer and more informative, and I made adjustments based on their recommendations.
2. Analysing Feedback:
Identifying Themes:
I reviewed the feedback to identify key themes, issues, or areas for improvement.
This involved looking for patterns or commonalities in the feedback, focusing on areas that required attention or adjustments.
For example, if multiple participants mentioned that a particular section was confusing or that a certain image was unsettling, I flagged these areas for review and revision.
Prioritising Changes:
I prioritised the changes based on their impact on the project’s goals, audience experience, and the feasibility of implementation.
This helped me focus on the most important and impactful adjustments while considering practical constraints like time and resources.
For instance, if a feedback issue was critical to the narrative but easy to fix, I addressed it immediately, while more complex or less impactful issues were scheduled for later review.
3. Making Iterative Adjustments:
Implementing Changes:
I began making the prioritised changes, adjusting the content, design, or functionality to improve the project.
For example, if feedback indicated that a narrative section was unclear, I revised the text or added visual aids to enhance understanding and clarity.
Testing Adjustments:
After making the adjustments, I tested them with users and experts to ensure the changes had the desired effect.
This involved repeating the feedback process with the adjusted elements, gathering new insights and further refining as needed.
For instance, if I changed the design of an interactive element based on feedback, I tested it again with users to see if the adjustment improved their experience.
4. Finalising and Continuous Improvement:

1. Communicating Objectives:
Clear Project Goals:
From the outset, I communicated the project’s goals, letting the audience know why the project was being undertaken and what it aimed to achieve.
I did this through introductory sections on the project website, as well as in presentations and outreach materials.
For example, in the project’s introduction, I outlined the aim of highlighting the diverse experiences of OFWs and advocating for their rights and well-being.
Purposeful Storytelling:
I also explained the purpose behind the project’s narratives, ensuring the audience understood the reasons for focusing on particular themes or stories.
This helped set the context and intention behind the storytelling, encouraging the audience to engage with the content thoughtfully.
For instance, when presenting stories of family separation, I highlighted the intention of raising awareness about the emotional costs of migration, inviting empathy and understanding.
2. Sharing Methods:
Research Process:
I was transparent about the research process behind the project, explaining how the stories, data, and insights were gathered and verified.
This involved providing details about the interviews, surveys, and secondary sources used, as well as the ethical considerations taken into account.
For example, I included a section on the project website detailing the qualitative interviews conducted with OFWs and the steps taken to ensure accuracy and ethical integrity.
Creative Decisions:
I also shared information about the creative decisions involved in the project, such as the choice of imagery, design, or narrative structure.
This helped the audience understand the thought and intention behind the project’s presentation, fostering appreciation and understanding.
For instance, I explained the decision to use a warm colour palette and personal photos to convey the themes of resilience and hope, inviting the audience to engage with the visual storytelling on a deeper level.
3. Acknowledging Limitations:
Scope and Boundaries:
I acknowledged the project’s scope limitations, being clear about what it could and couldn’t cover.
This included recognising time, resources, and focus constraints and setting realistic expectations with the audience.
For example, I clarified that the project focused primarily on the experiences of OFWs in specific sectors, such as healthcare and domestic work, and couldn’t fully represent the diversity of all OFWs.
Challenges and Trade-Offs:
I was open about the challenges and trade-offs faced in creating the project, such as balancing depth with breadth or storytelling with factual accuracy.
This transparency helped the audience understand the complexities and considerations involved, fostering trust and understanding.
For instance, I explained the difficulty of balancing emotional storytelling with accurate representation, acknowledging that some narratives might be simplified or generalised due to these constraints.
4. Inviting Feedback:
Open Dialogue:
I encouraged open dialogue with the audience, inviting their feedback, questions, and suggestions.
This included providing contact information, feedback forms, and discussion forums for the audience to share their thoughts and engage with the project.
For example, I set up a feedback form on the project webpage where users could share their impressions or report issues, and I monitored and responded to comments in discussion forums.
Continuous Improvement:
I committed to continuous improvement, letting the audience know that their feedback would be used to enhance the project and address any issues or concerns.

To enhance the map experience, I added features like zooming and filtering, allowing users to explore the map in detail or focus on specific regions or themes.
I also integrated dynamic elements, such as animated routes showing common migration paths, helping users visualise the global movement of OFWs.
For instance, users could filter the map to show only healthcare workers or view animated arrows illustrating migration flows from the Philippines to various countries.
3. Virtual Tours:
Designing the Tour:
I created virtual tours that allowed users to experience common OFW environments, such as homes, workplaces, and community centers.
The tours used 360-degree imagery and interactive hotspots, enabling users to navigate through the spaces and learn more about each setting.
For example, I created a virtual tour of an OFW’s home, where users could click on different objects to hear about the family’s daily life or see photos of loved ones back in the Philippines.
Immersing the Users:
To make the virtual tours immersive, I added audio elements, like ambient sounds or personal stories, and visual cues, like pop-up information or guiding arrows.
This created a rich sensory experience, helping users feel like they were truly exploring the environments and engaging with the stories.
For instance, when users clicked on a family photo in the virtual tour, they could hear the OFW talking about their family back home, adding emotional depth to the experience.
4. Interactive Storytelling:
Crafting the Stories:
I tried to develop interactive storytelling elements where users could choose different paths or perspectives and personalised explorations of OFWs’ experiences.
I wanted the stories to be structured like branching narratives, where users could make choices or answer questions that influenced the direction of the story, but this did not materialise due to time constraints.
For example, users would have been able to follow the story of an OFW deciding whether to stay abroad or return home, with different outcomes based on their choices.
Engaging the Users:
I tried to engage users by incorporating interactive features like quizzes, decision points, and feedback loops, encouraging active participation and reflection.
I also added multimedia elements, such as images, videos, and sound effects, to enhance the storytelling and immerse users in the narrative.

5. Following Up:
- Inviting Questions and Feedback:
- After the presentation, I invited questions and feedback from the audience, creating an opportunity for discussion and engagement.
- This helped clarify any issues, address concerns, and connect with the audience on a deeper level.
- For example, I set aside time for a Q&A session, where I answered questions about the project and listened to the audience’s thoughts and reactions.
- Providing Resources:
- I provided additional resources for the audience, such as handouts, links, and contact information, ensuring they could further engage with the project and its themes.
- This helped extend the impact of the presentation and encouraged continued engagement and discussion.
- For instance, I provided links to the digital exhibition and contact information for community organisations, allowing the audience to explore the project further or get involved in related initiatives.
By focusing on the presentation strategy, I aimed to deliver a compelling and impactful presentation that effectively communicated the key messages and themes of the project, while also engaging and connecting with the audience.
Evaluation and Feedback
After presenting the project about Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), I wanted to evaluate its effectiveness and gather feedback to understand how well it resonated with the audience and met its objectives. By focusing on evaluation and feedback, I aimed to identify strengths and areas for improvement, enhancing future projects.
1. Gathering Feedback:
- Using Surveys:
- I used surveys to gather feedback from the audience, focusing on aspects like their overall experience, the presentation’s clarity, and the content’s impact.
- This helped me understand how the audience perceived the project and identify areas for improvement.
- For example, I asked questions like “What did you find most engaging?” and “How could the presentation be improved?” to get detailed feedback.
- Conducting Interviews:
- I also conducted interviews with audience members, gathering in-depth feedback on their experiences and perspectives.
- This provided valuable insights into the project’s impact and highlighted specific issues or successes.
- For instance, I interviewed a few OFWs and community leaders to understand their reactions to the project, listening to their thoughts and suggestions for future improvements.
2. Evaluating Impact:
- Analysing Quantitative Data:
- I analysed quantitative data, such as attendance numbers, engagement metrics, and survey responses, to evaluate the project’s reach and impact.
- This helped me understand how many people were reached, how engaged they were, and what aspects resonated most.
- For example, I looked at metrics like the number of attendees, the average time spent on the project website, and the number of positive survey responses.
- Assessing Qualitative Feedback:
- I assessed qualitative feedback, such as audience comments, interview responses, and open-ended survey answers, to understand the project’s emotional and intellectual impact.
- This provided insights into how the project affected the audience’s attitudes, knowledge, or feelings.
- For instance, I reviewed comments about how the project increased empathy or raised awareness about OFW issues, which helped gauge its more profound impact.
3. Identifying Areas for Improvement:
- Highlighting Key Issues:
- Based on the feedback, I highlighted key issues or areas for improvement, such as elements that were confusing, lacking, or less engaging.
- This helped me focus on specific aspects that needed attention or enhancement.
- For example, I found that some users struggled with the navigation of the digital exhibition, so I highlighted this as an area to improve in future versions. Also, the first documentary was too long and lacked visual content resonating with the OFW experience.
- Prioritising Improvements:
- I prioritised the areas for improvement based on their impact on the audience experience and alignment with the project’s goals.
- This helped me focus on the most important and impactful changes, ensuring that future improvements would enhance the project’s effectiveness.
- For instance, I prioritised improving the clarity of certain narratives, which were critical to the project’s goal of raising awareness about OFW challenges.
4. Making Adjustments:
- Implementing Changes:
- I implemented changes based on the evaluation and feedback, making adjustments to the project to enhance its effectiveness and impact.
- This involved addressing key issues, refining elements, or expanding successful aspects.
- For example, I improved the navigation of the digital exhibition by adding clearer instructions and streamlining the user interface, enhancing the overall user experience. I also improved on the length of the documentary to 10 minutes with imagery that matches the OFW experience.
- Testing Adjustments:
- After making changes, I tested the adjusted elements with the audience, gathering feedback to ensure the adjustments were effective and improved the experience.
- This helped confirm the effectiveness of the changes and highlighted any remaining issues or further improvements needed.
- For instance, I conducted follow-up surveys and user testing to confirm that the improved navigation was clearer and more user-friendly, validating the adjustments and that the documentary was more interesting and not as dull as it was previously.
By focusing on evaluation and feedback, I aimed to understand how well the project met its objectives and resonated with the audience, using this understanding to enhance the project’s impact and improve future initiatives.
